Networking

Networking is one of the most useful ways to get yourself known and to also turn up possible positions that might interest you. Everybody you meet is a possible network contact and you should approach it this way. Every one person that you know will in turn know at least another 5 or 10 with even half that having a further 5 that know another 5 or 10 and on it goes. You could try to keep notes so that you can contact people directly.

Try to join business networks or chambers or societies in your areas. Ask your bank manager, s/he can be a very useful source of contacts. Talk to suppliers, competitors, college buddies, friends, and colleagues. Make sure that you don't talk yourself out of a job in the process. Talk to colleagues in other companies, go to seminars, go to exhibitions and conferences. Arrange to be at events, get involved in events. Join a golf club, a swimming club and so forth.

Talk to agencies; keep them updated on your plans, talk to search agents. Read the newspapers and keep track of anybody on the move to a new job. Ring them up and ask them for assistance. Keep track of new developments through the development agencies, local enterprise boards. Call them from time to time and ask about any new companies opening up or any new announcements.

Get to know people and let people know who you are. Be careful, however; it is a small place and also don't become a nuisance.
